While the source of all magic remains a mystery, all fae know it to be connected to the floating islands they call home. They feel a constant pull towards their respective homelands and may even resist leaving. Should fae stray too far from their homelands for too long, they will find their powers diminish until they return. The timing of this varies among races, but many choose to stay in their homelands or make regular return visits if they reside elsewhere. This bond is why small charms containing rocks or minerals from their homeland are popular among the fae, believing it to extend their power. Over time, many have even come to worship the land and the legends of island goddesses. Some races, such as merfolk and genasi, are tied to their respective elements rather than specific islands. Similarly, artificial races are not bound to any island.

Just as magic is so heavily associated with the existence of the islands, so too is society. One of the floating islands, Ourilatio of the seraphim, has become the centre of high society, hosting most events and soirees. To minimise time away from their homelands, high society restricts events to the summertime during an occasion known simply as "The Season." Nobles from other islands often own property in the affluent Diamond District of Verona, though these buildings are rarely occupied during off seasons.

On a darker note, rarely discussed for fear it may affect their own lands, rumours circulate about islands losing their magic and falling from the sky. While this phenomenon is recent and only a few minor islands have been affected, everyone fears what it might mean for their own magic. Currently, fae hailing from the affected islands still possess magic, but with no means to replenish it, their future remains uncertain.

TECHNOLOGY:

Technological developments in this world are equivalent to the 1800s. There is a mix of technology and magic to fuel development – eg. Both printing presses and magical quills can be used equally. Some rudimentary photography and audio recording devices exist but nothing similar to telephones or film yet. Transport is still primarily by horse and carriage however inventions aided by magic like flying carriages and ships between islands and early steam trains exist.
